Tumblr is a toxic enviroment.
There are so many blogs dedicated to pro-ana and pro-self harm and so many inner circles shut you down the moment your opinion differs from the collective group’s. Friends are gained so quickly here, but the majority of them are superficial and lost just as easily. And when someone has a problem, all they can do is make a post and hope someone sends them a virtual hug. Because that’s enough to make a person feel better.
It’s true, this site is a wonderful place to meet people with the same interests and show a side of yourself that you can’t in the real world for fear of ridicule, but other than that — beware.
Yes, I’m making this post tonight because I believe that a small fraction of Kasie’s issues came from Tumblr. It’s an obsessive environment that pulls you in and knocks you down every chance it gets. Clearly a website is not the only cause of her clinical depression — I’m not ignorant — but really, it certainly didn’t make things better.
So I’m begging you: log off now. If you’re depressed or easily hurt, run away from this place. You won’t regret it.
